M25 J10–J11 Concrete Grinding & Grooving
📍 M25, Surrey

In collaboration with Otto Alte-Teigeler GmbH, Grooving Concrete Ltd recently completed a concrete grinding and grooving trial for M Group across 28,000m² of the M25 mainline carriageway between Junctions 10 and 11.

The scope involved precision-guided longitudinal grinding to correct surface texture and restore evenness, followed by grooving to reinstate skid resistance and surface drainage — both carried out to NGCS (Next Generation Concrete Surface) specification.

Why grinding and grooving matters on concrete carriageways

Concrete sections of the M25 are durable, but over time surface texture wears unevenly, increasing road noise and reducing the surface's ability to shed water in wet weather. Grinding and grooving addresses both issues in a single treatment:

  • Noise reduction — fine longitudinal grinding smooths out irregularities in the surface, cutting down the tyre noise generated at motorway speeds, which benefits both motorists and residents living near the carriageway.
  • Improved skid resistance — the grooving pass reinstates a consistent macrotexture, giving tyres better grip in wet conditions and reducing stopping distances.
  • Better drainage — grooves channel surface water away more effectively, cutting down on spray and the risk of aquaplaning during heavy rain.
  • Extended pavement life — treating the surface this way avoids the need for full resurfacing, extending the working life of the existing concrete and reducing long-term maintenance costs and disruption.

The result for the surrounding area

For motorists travelling this stretch of the M25, the treated surface offers a smoother, quieter ride with improved grip in poor weather — particularly valuable on a high-speed, high-traffic section of motorway. For residents near the carriageway, the reduction in road noise is one of the most noticeable benefits, easing the impact of one of the busiest routes in the country on nearby communities.
